This week’s first reading is from the book of Job (pronounced “JOBE”). Some people speculate that it is not a coincidence that Job’s name is spelled the same as the word “job,” since the story of Job’s life contains long stretches of misery, tedium, and frustration—not unlike what many folks say about their working conditions. A recent survey found that 51-percent of American men say they do the vast majority of grocery shopping in their households. Hmm, that number doesn’t seem right. I occasionally go to the grocery store, and while there, I do see a few men. But most of them are doing exactly what I’m doing: pushing the shopping carts as our wives make all the purchasing decisions. Even if guys define doing the “vast majority of grocery shopping” as being a pack mule moving a cart when prodded with a stick, it’s still nowhere near 51-percent. (Continued...) |
